How should I breath while I practice yoga?

Proper breath is an essential part of a safe and effective yoga practice. As you inhale, relax your abdominals, allowing your belly to fill up with air. As you exhale, activate your abdominals muscles, gently pushing the air out of your body. Always maintain focus on your breath, allowing it to flow constantly and evenly throughout your entire practice. Be careful not to hold/retain your breath at any point (this is a common occurrence for beginners).

How do I «breath evenly»?

Throughout each video, you will hear the instructor asking you to «breath evenly». This means to bring your awareness to your breath, and allow the length of your inhale to equal the length of your exhale. Be careful not to hold/retain your breath at any point (this is a common occurrence for beginners).

I am new to yoga. Can I begin a yoga practice using this app, without consulting an instructor first?

The most important part of yoga is practicing safely and listening to your own, individual body. It is always a good idea to consult your healthcare provider before beginning any new form of exercise, especially if you have any medical conditions. **As a beginner, the best way to begin your yoga practice using this app is with the Asana and Exercises section. Repeat till you get confident on the mat, when it happens – you can switch to more complicated classes. You don't need any preparation to practice pranayamas and meditation.

Are there any contraindications for a yoga practice?

First and foremost, you as the practitioner are responsible for being aware of your body’s limitations. The most important part of yoga is practicing safely. There are some asanas (yoga postures) and exercises that do have contraindications. If you have any health conditions, and/or any doubts about your ability to perform a certain exercise or yoga in general, please consult your healthcare provider before beginning a yoga practice. It is necessary to avoid practice asanas and exercises during exacerbation of chronic diseases, as well as during periods of physical ailment.

Who can practice yoga? Are there any special skills I need in order to start a yoga practice?

There is no special training or skills required in order to begin your yoga practice. All ages and abilities can practice yoga. The most important aspect of beginning your yoga practice is to be aware of your own personal abilities and limitations (we all have them!) during every component of the practice. Keep in mind that not all postures/exercises are meant for all people, listen to your body and respect the boundaries of your personal practice.

Is it okay to feel pain while practicing yoga?

No, you are never meant to be in pain while practicing yoga. It is absolutely not okay to experience pain, please be mindful of the sensations in your body any time while practicing yoga and using this app. The most important part of yoga is practicing safely! When beginning a new yoga practice, your body can feel some discomfort. This is because you are activating and engaging your muscles and body parts in new ways. With regular practice, this discomfort should begin to subside. As your practice develops, new areas will continue to be activated and stretched in new ways. Please never rush in order to get quick results. Trust and respect the pace of your personal progression. Yoga is about the process, not about achieving one goal.

Should I eat before my yoga practice? Or after?

It is highly recommended to practice yoga on an empty stomach. Practicing on a full stomach may result in nausea and discomfort. If practicing in the morning, enjoy a glass of water before hand, or a cup of herbal tea to curb your hunger. We recommend waiting at least 30 to 40 minutes after class before having a meal, but if your hunger is too strong to wait, keep the meal light. When practicing in the afternoon or evening, wait at least 1-2 hours after a meal before beginning your yoga practice.

What is the best time of day to practice yoga?

The best time for yoga is anytime that you decide to practice! Sometimes the urge is right here, right now. When practicing in the morning, its helpful to have a practice that focusing on boosting you energy and setting the tone for your day ahead. For an evening practice, consider a class that focuses on stress-relief and relaxation. Don’t be afraid to experiment in order to find the best time of day for your yoga practice!

How do I choose a yoga video? Is it okay to practice different classes?

For new users, is there a specific intro video, video series that can be recommended here? Or a set sequence of videos for the new user building their practice? Because there is so much content, it seems hard to be sure they are choosing the videos safe/appropriate for them.

Parts of my body are trembling during some exercises, is that okay?

Yes, this is normal! Experiencing trembling, in the limbs especially, is a normal response to building strength with a new yoga practice, particularly for yoga newbies. The trembling happens when a main muscle being exercises becomes overloaded, and nearby muscle groups also contract in response. This is a signal from your body that this part of the body has reached its threshold, and it is highly recommended to back away and stop this particular motion. No need to torture yourself – let your muscles rest! As you continue practicing throughout the weeks, your muscles will continue to strengthen, and the trembling will begin to subside.

Should I practice yoga every day?

Ideally, we recommend practicing yoga 6 days a week, with 1 day off. This will be a fast track to healthy and happy living! Try to keep your practice regular, without overloading yourself. If it is not possible to complete a full class each day, try to fit in a meditation, pranayama, or warm up video.

Is it safe for women to practice yoga during their period?

Each women’s physiology is unique and individual. Some women will feel like practicing during menstruation, and some will not. This can also vary for each person month to month. It is important to listen to your own body. For those ladies who feel like practicing yoga during their period, we have created sequenced specialized to support your body during this time. For those women who do not feel drawn to a physical practice, focus on relaxing and restoring your body with the breathing and meditation technique videos.

Should I practice yoga if I am feeling super tired?

It is always a good time to practice yoga. If you are feeling tired, it is better to have a gentle practice, starting with relaxing in Savasana (Corpse Pose), adding some supine asanas, followed by sitting and standing asanas. When feeling tired, we also recommend focusing on breathing techniques and meditation.

I am not able to copy all of the postures from the videos. What should I do?

If you can't copy the postures, the same advanced as they shown on the videos, please don't give up! Keep on trying and one day you'll be able to get into any asana. The most important is to keep practice regular. Start with simple sequences, like warm-ups, then add some basic asanas into your practice and, after you feel comfortable with postures, you can start practicing full classes. Step by step, being aware of body sensations and avoiding pain, you will get more and more comfortable with your body and your yoga practice. Small steps will bring you to amazing results.

How should I start my yoga practice?

The most difficult in yoga is to unroll the mat. It is important to remember that to achieve any result, somehow, some effort is required. We've created lots of different yoga sequences for different levels of students and variable duration, so that the busiest people can find suitable class for them. It is recommended to start with 15 minutes classes and listen to your own body, which will certainly respond with gratitude for the efforts. With regular practice, only a month later, the first results will be visible.

Do I need a yoga mat to practice yoga?

We highly recommend using a yoga mat for your practice. A yoga mat provides comfort, good grip with surface and protect articular cartilages from injuries.
